MI0217 - Tour of Drax Power Plant
Time: 14:30 - 16:30 Region: Midlands
Venue: Drax Power Station, Drax, Selby , YO8 8PH
Drax generates approximately 7-8% of the UK’s electricity – that’s a lot of boiling kettles. To do this, Drax operates on a massive scale. At the Selby Power Plant, there are six boilers, each as high as a 15-storey office block, a main chimney taller than the London Eye, and over 1,800 miles of steel tubing, enough to stretch from John O’Groats to Land’s End and back again.
At Drax Power Station you will be able to see every part of how electricity generation is done and find out how they are upgrading to the latest biomass technology. This means we can use compressed wood pellets instead of coal, which cuts our carbon footprint by 80%.
The tour includes an interactive session in our visitor centre and guided walks inside the very heart of the station.
Please find a location map here, and information all visitors need to know before attending the site here. On arrival at site, drive up to the south gatehouse, the tour leader will need to check-in with security. The driver of the transport will then be directed to the visitor centre where your tour will start.
